West
Hills Food Pantry
Serving the Community Since 1983
Volunteers are the key to our success! Our organization is staffed and operated 100% by volunteers. Sandy Hershberger is the volunteer Director of the Food Pantry and has served in that capacity since November of 1986. Our volunteers, order our food, unload the trucks, stock our shelves, man our door, manage our paperwork, complete required reporting, manage our database, pack our groceries, push groceries up the hill, clean our sidewalks and yes even empty the garbage. It takes between 20 and 30 volunteers each Tuesday to run our food pantry on a regular basis. During the holiday season when we have many special giveaways and events we utilize 50-60 volunteers each Tuesday. In addition, volunteers are need to unload the truck one Monday a month.
Typically our volunteers arrive between 8 and 8:30am to prepare for the day. There are bread donations from Panera Bread that must be bagged, chairs and tables to set up, computers to get going and coffee to be made. The doors open at 9:00am and typically we are finished at 1:00pm.
There are also special functions when we require large numbers of volunteers for single events such as the Postal Carriers food drive or the local Mile of Cans food drive. Each and every food item must be checked for date, categorized and shelved for distribution. This takes an army of volunteers and a lot of work. But among the hard work we also find a lot of satisfaction and more than little fun. Currently the generosity of the community has satisfied our immediate needs for volunteers; however if you would like to volunteer, please complete the following form and we will be in contact with you. Please indicate whether you would like to volunteer to help with unloading trucks and stocking, on Tuesdays with clients, special events, or Holidays. Thank you for your interest.
